I became a fan of Don Oberbier when he first appeared in The Black Death of Babylon (A Don Oberbier Novel Book 1).Don is not you typical police/military guy. He's certainly not your typical scientist. He lives in the odd world in-between. A wonderful, action packed, suspenseful world. I hate assigning tropes, but I know it's easier to help the reader get an idea what your looking at. So, think CSI with zombies.
BUT, not really zombies. Clear as mud, right?
Regardless of the general idea of the story, Ed McFadden tells a compelling story that will keep you reading and asking for more when you're done.
Not too laden in science or "trope cannon" but not dumbed down either. At the risk of being corny, this one will keep you AWAKE at night as you turn page after page until the exciting conclusion.
I highly recommend AWAKE for readers of action and techno thrillers. You won't be disappointed.

I think this novel deserves more than five stars. Its different, not you're average zombie novel. Don is a man's man and everyone will love him. Lester had a shadowed past but he managed to win me over. Maureen the nurse is strong and interesting. This unpredictable so of novel will take you on an epic, heart racing adventure that will leave you breathless.
Hero shouldn't give up. He left the dog alone. It needed a better ending after all they went through. Done.
I really don’t like unhappy endings and leaving the dog was awful.
A unique twist on the zombie tale. Enjoyed this one! Also, a touching ending with the dog.
Do you like Zombies, but hate how stupid most zombie Apocalypses are?
Do you prefer something like 28 days later?
Then buy AWAKE. Immediately.

Do it after you read AWAKE for the first time.
Fantastic read for fans of post apocalyptic fiction. This book is a well written adventure that will keep you not only on the edge of your seat but also thinking and that's an impressive thing.
This is just a great book. I've read works by McFadden before, and had to read it when I learned the protagonist was the same Don Oberbier from The Black Death of Babylon (another incredible book). The story at face value seems like a standard end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it, but thankfully it sets itself apart pretty quick. Yes there's a virus changing people. Yes they're zombie-like (but not zombies). Yes there's a group of survivors trying to escape ... but if you didn't have that you wouldn't have a story either.
The familiar is far outweighed by the new, as this reads less like a zombie apocalypse and more like a detective story in bizarro world. Don't get me wrong, zombie apocalypse fans should love this as well, as they won't be disappointed by the hoards of "sleepers" swarming through Miami. But the overall feel of the story is familiar enough to be comfortable, yet surprising enough to keep you awake.
